Title of Document: MODELING AND EXPERIMENTS ON INJECTION INTO UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND ELECTRON RING Gang Bai, Master of Science, 2005 Directed By: Professor Patrick G. O’Shea Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering The University of Maryland Electron Ring (UMER) is built as a low-cost testbed for intense beam physics for benefit of larger ion accelerators. The beam intensity is designed to be variable, spanning the entire range from low current operation to highly space-charge-dominated transport. The ring has been closed and multi-turn commissioning has begun. One of the biggest challenges of multi-turn operation of UMER is correctly operating the Y-shaped injection/recirculation section, which is specially designed for UMER multi-turn operation. It is a challenge because the system requires several quadrupoles and dipoles in a very stringent space, resulting in mechanical, electrical, and beam control complexities. Also, the earth’s magnetic field and the image charge effects have to be investigated because they are strong enough to impact the beam centroid motion. This thesis presents both simulation and experimental study of the beam centroid motion in the injection region to address above issues. Maryland at FIRE 2011: Retrieval of OCR'd Bengali

In this year's Forum for Information Retrieval Evaluation (FIRE), the University of Maryland participated in the Retrieval of Indic Script OCRed Text (RISOT) task to experiment with the retrieval of Bengali script OCR’d documents. The experiments focused on evaluating a retrieval strategy motivated by recent work on Cross-Language Information Retrieval (CLIR), but which makes use of OCR error m...

Analysis of the Effects of Hyperthermia with Magnetic Nanoparticles on Cancer Tissues

Introduction: Hyperthermia is one of the noninvasive methods of treating cancer. In this method, heat can be generated in several methods. One of these methods is injecting magnetic nanoparticles as a solution into the tumor site and place it in a magnetic field. Methods: The study was analytical one, modeling was performed using computational methods, and in vitro experimental data were used ...

Experimental Investigation and Modeling of Asphaltene Precipitation Due to Gas Injection

Asphaltene instability is one of the major problems in gas injection projects throughout the world. Numerous models have been developed to predict asphaltene precipitation; The scaling equation is an attractive tool because of its simplicity and not involving complex properties of asphaltene. In this work, a new scaling model is presented to account  for asphaltene precipitation due to gas ...
